A few weeks ago, I received a call from the Gilbert Visual Art League to see if I would be interested in speaking about my art at their April 4th meeting. After hearing a bit about their organization and some preliminary details, I happily obliged. At the time, it was a good thing I didn’t fully realize I was committing to an hour-long presentation regarding my art and processes in front of 25-30 league members! If you know an artist or two, you know we aren’t well known for our public speaking skills.

I work in a variety of materials so I talked a little bit about how, as an artist, I made the transition from traditional oil painting into using a variety of mixed media. I brought along a whole table set up and demonstrated how I build my molds, discussed the mixing and casting process of concrete and answered a lot of great questions from the audience. I was grateful for the opportunity. I’m happy to have discovered that public speaking for artist can go pretty well if we can use our voice and demonstrate with our hands.

My art studio will be open to the public during the weekend of Art Detour 25 & 7th Ave Melrose Street Fair. All are encouraged to come by for a visit. This garage has been my working studio of about a year. Come by to see a few past art pieces and projects along with what I’m currently working on. Even if we’ve never met, feel free to stop in, say hello, and have some food and drink. My studio is on the fringe, as it’s a few miles north of the downtown Art Detour festivities. It’s located near 7th Ave & Camelback, but worth the stop.

I began working on this piece a few months ago. The bone is part of a horse jaw bone and I recently cast an aluminum metal version of it. For several years, my work has been exploring the contrast and balance between industrial and organic materials. After my own hip replacement last year, I’m getting to experience this journey of organic biology blended with industrial technology on a much more intimate level. As I mentioned in a previous post, the approach to my work is shifting as a result of these changes in my life. It’s exciting for me to watch that unfold in my work.

Use Your Words

The horse jaw bone and it’s aluminum casting counterpart are embedded into the gray concrete. The tip of each jawbone encounters a round recessed area. On the left side are metal gears and piston ring which contain a small bird egg nested in grass. The recess on the right contains a large seed pod with a copper domed center. The pod is nested among metal piston rings. Three dried saguaro bones tether from underneath the concrete panel. Used machine parts, metal scraps and spent bullets share space with found wood, glass vials containing plant and soil, along with palo verde seeds and eucalyptus buds nailed into hand-crafted copper domes.

I’ve been taking a look at the range of my previous work in order to connect some dots. Over the last 13+ years, my work has gone through significant transitions. Below is a range of images from 2000 – 2012. The two oil paintings on the top left are from around 2000 while at college in Virginia. The top two on the right and the bottom piece on the left are mixed media pieces completed not long after I moved to Phoenix (2002 – 2005). The 2nd piece on lower left is a light box from 2006 when I first added concrete into my mixed media palette. The work shifted again in 2008 (bottom center) when I began to mold and cast the concrete art panels. The last two pieces were created in recent years and as I’ve continued the exploration of concrete as an art medium.

Each shift in the approach to my work seems to closely parallel a significant transition within my life. After recently recovering from a long-awaited hip replacement surgery, there is again an intuitive drive to recalibrate my approach – perhaps because my own physical architecture is doing the same as I continue to heal. I’m not entirely sure how this shift will impact my work just yet, so I’ve just been quietly working on small pieces in my studio. They are more like small exercises …which feel very much like my physical rehabilitation did. I find myself building upon muscle memory, incremental shifts, and exploring more ideas about adaptation.

Currently, I feel stuck and recharged all in the same breath – just like learning to use my left leg again. As I explore ideas, I find myself fixated on this quote: “…I think while appropriation has produced some interesting art work…for me, the most interesting thing is to back yourself into your own corner where no one else’s answers will fit. You will somehow have to come up with your own personal solutions to this problem that you have set for yourself because no one eles’s answers are applicable.” – Chuck Close.

About Subsidized Adaptations:
For human civilization to exist as it does in today’s modern world, our adaptations have been accelerated by conscious decisions to secure assistance through radically modifying our collective habitation. This process has become an integral, influential part of our human character and is a key component which differentiates us from all other species.
